The Goal

The overall goal of the network is to bring together a number of research groups in the field of “Crystal Engineering” and “Supramolecular Solid State Chemistry”. Each group work in different parts of the “Crystal Engineering” spectrum, from organic chemistry to magnetism and with research goals spanning from advanced materials to biochemistry. The Nordic-Baltic network in the area will provide the catalyst for efficient communication and collaboration of these groups by the sharing of instrumentation, ideas, students and know-how.

The Science

As the field of supramolecular chemistry develops, solid-state aspects are becoming increasingly important. In particular the determination and analysis of crystal structures has become a key component of any research program in the subject area. Thus, effective collaboration between chemists and crystallographers is more necessary and valuable than ever before. We thus see significant benefits in bringing together “hydrogen-bond researchers” with “coordination chemists” and ”crystallographers”, since each provides a vital component in the overall development of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry.
